Violent Storm Hits Kalimantan, Five Missing

Padangekspres.net- Violent storm and tidal waves hit 86 villages in six districts in South Kalimantan, destroying buildings and injuring people.
“Five people went missing, 3,000 people wounded, and dozens of houses are damaged,” spokesperson of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, told VIVAnews today.

The six districts hit by the tornado included Banjarmasin (15 villages), Tanah Laut (29 villages), Tanah Bumbu (20 villages), Kota Baru (10 villages), and Barito Kuala (12 villages).
The event took place around 3 PM on Monday, March 19, as clouds suddenly turned dark and, at the same time, high tides went up to the ground exceeding the normal speed. “People's homes are inundated,” said Sutopo.
The tidal wave thumped the coast for 3.5 hours, which has never occurred within the past 10 years. "People ran to higher grounds because there was an issue of tsunami,” said Sutopo.
The local disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) in South Kalimantan has coordinated with SAR team to handle the victims.  Emergency shelters are prepared.
“BPBD and the people are conducting searches,” said Sutopo.  He added that relief aid has been distributed to the people.
