LinkedIn now available in Indonesian

New market: Clifford Rosenberg, LinkedIn’s managing director for Asia and the Pacifi c and Australia, recently discussed the launch of an Indonesian version of the company’s website. JP/Willy WilsonPadangekspres.net-Professional networking site LinkedIn is set to expand its business in Indonesia by launching an Indonesian version of its website.
According to Clifford Rosenberg, the company’s managing director for Asia and the Pacific and Australia, Indonesia is a very promising market despite the fact that there are only around 800,000 LinkedIn members here – a far cry from India, China and Brazil, which count 12 million, 2 million and 6 million members respectively.

“Launching a Bahasa Indonesia version of LinkedIn will make the website more relevant to the local market. With 40 million active Internet users in the country, we reckon there’s a great business opportunity for us in Indonesia,” he said.

“There’s a real need for today’s professionals to build what is known to be a personal brand. That is, an interactive and updated professional resume accessible to companies, peers and industry insiders. In other words, there’s a need for quality professional networking,” he explained.

And when language is no longer a barrier, Rosenberg added, Indonesian professionals can join their peers from other countries who have benefited from the site’s impressive resources.

LinkedIn has launched applications suitable for android-based devices and smartphones. Unfortunately, those applications are only available in English.

Asked about the competition from popular networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, Rosenberg commented that LinkedIn “has never been in competition with them, as we are not a social networking site.”

He pointed out that LinkedIn is a professional networking site, and therefore the objective of its members isn’t to make friends but “to build quality professional relationships with people who are relevant to their profession”.

“We don’t encourage our members to network with people they don’t have anything to do with, as each network built in our website must be based on professional relevance,” he added.

Founded in 2003, LinkedIn was a startup that quickly became a Silicon Valley success story. Today, LinkedIn is one of the largest networking sites, with more than 135 million members in 200 countries.

The company has a diversified business model with revenue coming from member subscriptions, marketing solutions and hiring solutions. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, LinkedIn has offices across North America as well as throughout Europe and Asia and in India and Australia.

“As of Sept. 30, 2011, LinkedIn counts executives from all 2011 Fortune 500 companies as members. The same report stated that one of our revenue sources, which is corporate hiring solutions, has been used by 75 of the Fortune 100 companies,” Rosenberg said.
