Padangekspres.net-Scores of
counter terrorism experts from Asia and Europe will gather in Yogyakarta
on Monday and Tuesday to discuss and design strategies on how to enhance
cooperation among governments and communities to combat terrorism, the Foreign
Ministry said.
According to the
ministry’s director general for European and American affairs Retno L.P.
Marsudi, Indonesia was asked
to host the 9th ASEM Conference on Counter Terrorism (ASEM-CCT) at the
10th ASEM Foreign Ministers Meeting in Godollo, Hungary,
some time in June this year.
“They [ASEM leaders] see us a country with a
lot of success in combating terrorism,” Retno told The Jakarta Post on
Sunday.
As the host, Indonesia
prepared a concept paper for the meeting, in which it stated that terrorists
constitute a marginal minority, but they are in fact integrated within
communities.
“This is why
communities need to play a central role in many different areas of the counter
terrorism strategy,” it said.
Indonesia’s
counterterrorism agency chief Ansyaad Mbai will deliver a keynote speech at the
meeting.
