Padangekspres.net-Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan has been suspended as a DAP
member for six months with immediate effect for suggesting that the
Jalur Gemilang be replaced.
DAP disciplinary committee chairmanTan Kok Wai said Manoharan’s
“improper comments” over the flag were unbecoming for a party
standard-bearer.
“We feel this is the right punishment meted out
to him,” he said after chairing a four-hour meeting at the DAP
headquarters yesterday.
Manoharan has 14 days to appeal against the decision with the party’s central executive committee.
With the suspension, the firstterm assemblyman ceases to be party
member for six months and cannot participate in any partyrelated
activities. His position as an assemblyman is not affected.
Recently,
Manoharan posted a status message on his Facebook page that he would be
distributing DAP flags on Malaysia Day in lieu of the Jalur Gemilang as
he felt the national flag represented Barisan Nasional.
His comment received flak from numerous quarters, including his colleagues.
Manoharan then apologised and took down his controversial posting.
Despite the apology, Tan said Manoharan's remarks were uncalled for and that he had made a "terrible mistake".
"A national flag is a symbol of the country and what he said does not reflect the true spirit of patriotism DAP is upholding."
When contacted yesterday, Manoharan said he would be appealing against the decision soon.
"I have 14 days to file my appeal and am prepared to go through the due process," he said.
Bentayan
assemblyman Gwee Tiong Hiang and three members from Bakri division were
also suspended for six months for improprieties in managing party
funds.
The trio had used party funds to buy a pick up truck worth RM45,000 and register it under their own company.
"The transaction was against the party's spirit.
"We had to take action as this was a serious breach of discipline," Tan said.
