Put the Police under a department rather than under the President: Imparsial

Padangekspres.net-Human rights watchdog Imparsial said that it would be better to put the Police under a department rather than directly under the President.
“Putting the police under the President is prone to misconduct and may be politicized,” Al Araf from Imparsial said in a press release on Tuesday. “This is an essential requirement in police reform, to improve professionalism and avoid using them merely as a tool.”
Al Araf said it was possible to put the Police under the Home Affairs Ministry, the Justice and Human Rights Ministry or the Attorney General’s Office. “Or by establishing a police ministry,” he added.
The idea, he said, was in line with a recent survey conducted by Imparsial.
“The majority of people that took part in our survey agreed to put them under a department rather than the President,” he said.
Imparsial randomly surveyed 500 people aged above 17 at all five districts in Jakarta between June 17 and July 4.
As many as 28.8 percent of public respondents agreed the Police should answer to the the AGO, followed by 18.8 percent suggesting Home Affairs Ministry guidance. Six percent of those surveyed favored the Defense Ministry; four percent supported the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, while only four percent favored the supervision of the Indonesian military.
